It’s time to delve into the different types of common threats that your children might come across online! The first three threats that we’ll cover this week are the more obvious scams that most of us are familiar with. So it should be relatively easier to explain to your child about what key signs to look out for when browsing online.

Prize Scams

These are usually written in a way that informs the viewer that they have won a BIG prize, which may be a random lotto, shopping and holiday vouchers or travel related products.

Money Scams

Similar to the prize scam, they use the method of requesting personal information or transferring money to win a product or reward. Strangely enough, they even falsely promise viewers to claim a large sum of money by paying a ‘small’ fee.

Dating Scams

Appealing to the user’s emotional or romantic feelings, these scams can catch you off-guard as they trick you into submitting personal details, for fake compatibility tests or horoscopic information.

So here was the first part of the common types of online fraud that your children may come across. Stick around for future blog posts to find out about the more subtle methods that cybercriminals use to scam people.
